Pre-production on the 23rd James Bond film is expected to start in January according to producers, plus hints on other aspects of the next adventure...

Thoughts Turn To Bond 23
31st October 2008

As is the norm for the James Bond franchise, talk of the next adventure has heated up before the current outing has opened worldwide. With "Quantum of Solace" - Daniel Craig's second outing as 007 - due out in UK cinemas tomorrow, the media has started to question those involved about the next film. After "Quantum", the next film will be the 23rd in the series produced by EON.

Early hints at the timeline for Bond 23 suggested there might be a longer than usual gap between outings. Michael G. Wilson told reporters back in April that he expected production machinery to take a breather after work on "Quantum of Solace" was completed. Wilson said he expected to pause for at least a year, meaning Bond 23 would be likely released in 2011. "I need a break for a little while," he said.

Before filming had completed on "Quantum of Solace", director Marc Forster confirmed he would not be back for the follow-up adventure. "If I would ever do a big movie again in that size," he said, "it has to be my own franchise, which I would create from scratch, which I would cast, create the look and really create the franchise on my own."

Now that the two-film story arc of "Casino Royale" and "Quantum" has completed, some have already raised the prospect of characters like Q and Miss Moneypenny returning. “I would love to [include them next time], but I think you offer it to the best actors you can and you say to them, ‘Forget what’s happened, reinvent it, tell us what you think these characters should be,’ and that’s where it should come from,” Daniel Craig said last week.

During the recent press junkets Craig said that Bond 23 had not been scheduled. "As far as the next film's concerned, there is nothing scheduled," he said.

Things seem to have firmed up over the past week though, as producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson talked to Heart FM about Bond 23 on the red carpet at last night's premiere. When asked if Craig would return for another outing, Broccoli said it was a dead cert, she replied: "Oh please! Are you kidding? He’s got to come back, we’re not going to let him go. Are you crazy?” Wilson added: “It would be insane not to bring him back. He is the greatest Bond right now and the people love him.”

Wilson also confirmed that work was due to start on Bond 23. He explained: "Last time when we were in post production on Casino Royale we were already working on Quantum Of Solace. This time we haven’t even started but in January we are going to get some writers together and start kicking some ideas around." Starting the screenplay in January could mean that Bond 23 hits the traditional November slot in 2010.

When asked if new Bond girl Olga Kurylenko could return, Broccoli confirmed there was a strong possibility. She said, “I think she’s a spectacular actress and she’s done an amazing job in this movie. She blew us away. We would certainly love to have her back. If it’s not in the next movie, then certainly in the future."

"I'd love to reinvent Q and Moneypenny"

Daniel Craigs talks about his ideas for 'Bond 23'

Written by Tim Roth on 08 Nov, 2008

In an interview with German newspaper Die Welt, Daniel Craig commented on possible story ideas and details for Bond 23.

Asked whether the Bond he portrays would stay monogamic in the next films, Craig said: "We have plenty of time in the next installment to tell that story [of Bond sleeping with women]. We introduced the "new Bond" properly with these two films, so now everything is possible: hollowed-out volcanoes, undersea lairs, characters such as Q and Moneypenny. All this could return to the franchise. I would love if we reinvented these two charachters. But we would need to get the best actors around for these roles."

In the next question, Craig was asked about the rumours that he asked for a gay sex scene in a future James Bond film. Laughing, the British actor said: "I know that this is an internet rumour and everybody asks me about it. I have nothing against homosexuals and as you may know, I already played a gay man in another film. But I will never ever play a gay James Bond. If that is ever going to happen, I will quit the job."

Sony braces for life without James Bond

Bond 23 - 18-11-08

The firepower of the new James Bond release "Quantum of Solace" -- which blasted to the top of the box-office charts this weekend with a $67.5-million U.S. debut and has already racked up $250 million in overseas ticket sales -- must come as bittersweet news for Sony PIctures. Sure the studio, which co-financed the $180-million-budget picture with MGM, will share in the film's riches as it makes its way through theaters, DVD, television and other media outlets. But, just as the countless beauties whom 007 left in the lurch over the last four decades, Sony too will soon find itself out in the cold after "Quantum" fades to black - reports the LA Times.

As part of its equity investment in MGM in 2005, when it led a $4.9-billion buyout of the legendary studio with a consortium of investors, Sony inherited the right to co-finance and distribute MGM's Bond movies. Sony made a killing on the first of those releases, "Casino Royale," which grossed nearly $600 million worldwide at the box office alone. Because Sony put up 75% of the film's $150-million budget, it received an even bigger cut of the profit than MGM. A person familiar with the matter said the film made $150 million-plus, of which Sony walked off with more than $100 million.

But, by the time "Casino Royale" was released in 2006, the partnership between Sony and MGM had imploded. MGM's board voted unanimously to dump Sony as the domestic distributor of its DVDs after the studio failed to meet certain performance targets. With that move, Sony was also forced to forfeit its claim to the coveted Bond franchise. In its separation agreement, Sony negotiated to participate in one final Bond movie, "Quantum of Solace."

When Sony first became involved in "Casino Royale," the studio's movie chief Amy Pascal spent a lot of time cultivating Bond's longtime London-based producers and creative gatekeepers, Michael Wilson and Barbara Brocoli. Pascal worked closely with the producers on reinventing the four decades-old franchise with a more updated feel and edgier leading man. The suave, polished British secret agent portrayed by such actors as Sean Connery, Roger Moore and others, not only gave way to the screen's first Blond Bond, but a much grittier, three-dimensional character played by Daniel Craig.

So, what will Sony do without Bond in the house? No worries. The Culver City studio has several other macho franchise films in the works including such superhero vehicles as "The Green Hornet," to star Seth Rogen and directed by Stephen Chow (who will also play the crime fighting hero's sidekick Kato) and "Flash Gordon," to be directed by Breck Eisner (yes, that's Michael's son). Also in the works is an adaptation of the graphic novel "The Preacher," to be directed by Sam Mendes. And, let's not forget Sony's plans to make two more "Spider-Man" films and a sequel to "Hancock," starring Will Smith. The studio is also aiming to make more softer-edge family films to capitalize on one of the few growing segments of the moviegoing audience (see Monday's Times Business section).

That's not to say Pascal & Co. won't miss Bond.

"We grew to love these movies," Pascal said in a recent interview. "Obviously, we'd love to stay involved, but it's not our decision, it's MGM's."

True but then again, given MGM's current financial straits, never say never.

Producer Michael G. Wilson talks about unexplored Fleming writings

Bond 23 - 21-11-08

There could be at least one original 007 story by Ian Fleming waiting to be discovered, but movie producer Michael G. Wilson is in no hurry to find it - reports The Star.

With the release of Quantum of Solace, a title lifted from a Fleming short story, the Bond well has just about run dry. Every 007 novel known to have been penned by series creator Fleming, who died in 1964, has now been used for a movie.

So have most of the short stories by Fleming. But tantalizing rumours persist that unpublished Bond tales by the author are tucked away in a drawer somewhere. Wilson has heard the same rumours, but said he hasn't chased them down.

"We've heard there were," he said. "We could look and see. Somebody told me they had a copy of something he wrote, but I don't know. An unfinished manuscript? I'm not sure what it is. I don't even know if it's a Bond story as such."

That leaves the short stories The Hildebrand Rarity, Risico, The Property of a Lady and 007 in New York as the only official remaining Fleming originals. Elements of the first three have already been plundered for previous Bond films, while 007 in New York is a comic jotting that includes Bond's recipe for scrambled eggs.

It seems only the shipboard intrigue of The Hildebrand Rarity bears future reworking, but Wilson is unsure whether a film by that title could fly.

"I don't know, The Hildebrand Rarity? What do you think?" Wilson said, chuckling. "If we can get away with Quantum of Solace, we can get away with anything."

I think, they could have a go at Mathew Vaughn to direct the next one. He has proved he can handle suspense, will have help with the action and had a great relationship with Daniel.
The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..

Wow, that's quick! I wish they would slow down. Daniel deserves a break now!

QoS was rushed, yes, it was. The writer's strike and all, I'm not buying the reviews. They had to throw that thing together and have credited at least 3 writers, no telling how many people put it togther with the strike looming large over their heads. They need to take their time for the next one and do it right.

Daniel got smashed up in QoS, needed surgery during and afterwards, in CR he needed oral work (not that ) etc.......
Let's not kill the golden goose. I'd like to see more drama, less action. More "A" less "T" Okay for Daniel both T & A okay

tell me, what do you mean by that?

I have looked up "A and T" in the urban dictionary, it gives back two explanations.....

1. Tits and Ass
2. Yes, it does in fact mean "tits and ass", but it rarely is referring to the anatomy of just one female. It is used more in a descriptive generality... usually used to characterize a particular genre of entertainment, e.g. movies, TV, pop music, etc. It is often used pejoratively.

I like the first one and I admit: more of that in Bond23    (but the male "layout")

I hope I didn't offend anyone.
Yes, you got it. I meant the first one. I don't mind Daniel's T & A or a combo of Bond Girl w/ Bond.

I didn't think the writer/dierctor etc.... played it right, to go to all those warm weather climates and have Camille in t-shirts, no stockings, up skirt shots of no named actress and no Bond skin or even a good A shot with all that he has to offer. Nobody paid to see her! I mean it is show business.

The most seductive picture.

Whilst discussing james Bond to my mother in law who is 82 years old god bless her.

She felt the most seductive sequence in a James Bond film was the shower scene in Casino Royale.

Well thats all I wanted to say.

I agree - Mark Forster didn´t play his top card to all it is worth, but chose to downplay it - and knowing Daniel, he was all for it...

I like your mother in law already. Okay we'd better get back on topic before Aragorn cracks down on us

For Bond 23 I hope for more sensuous scenes. Something to excite our senses. Even a softer theme song.

Daniel Craig promises Bond 23 will feature more sensual scenes

Bond 23 - 02-12-08

Bond star Daniel Craig has made a raunchy promise to 007 fans - the superspy's next big screen outing will be much steamier - reports Contact Music.

Craig's latest turn as the suave secret agent, Quantum of Solace, has proved a huge hit with fans and critics alike, shooting to number one at the U.K. and U.S. box office - enjoying the most lucrative Bond film opening in history.

But Craig and Bond boss Barbara Broccoli decided to focus on 007's action-packed career, rather than his bedroom antics - much to the dismay of red-blooded fans.

However, the British actor has promised the next film in the successful franchise will involve more sexy scenes - despite vowing never to strut around half-naked after the attention he garnered for his famous speedo-sporting shot in his Bond debut, Casino Royale.

He says, "For Bond to jump in bed with ten women would contradict the whole things."

"But the next movie - everybody wants it (saucy scenes) so we're going to have it."
