Maybe that injury he had left some kind of a mark or identation which the make-up artists sort of "use" as a starting point for their work.

Didn't he say he once busted his nose playing rugby? Didn't really break it, but almost? Maybe this happened on several occasions, he does have a little scar there if you look closely while watching his movies.
Ouch...

Anesidora - That scene was very painful to watch....exactly like watching a father beating up his little 6 year old son.....tears welling up.

I find it always hard to watch a grown-up being weak in that disturbed way. Dan played it so well - as they say, he`s doing humiliated so good. Don´t wanna think about why that might be so.
The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..

I also found the scene very shocking and hard to watch ... feeling the tears coming into my eyes. I cannot stand abuse, verbal, physical, whatever... and less that of a father to a child (no matter the age)... so cruel.

And I agree that DC is just brilliant in this scene: 100% credible

No doubt it's great acting. 8) But still, you have to draw on your own experience in order to be able to convey something like that in a believable way. I guess everyone has had that feeling at some point, I too wonder what his experience was. Alas, we'll never know. :|

Our Friends in the North. It's in the gallery. That's Malcolm McDowell at the other end of the banknote.
