In Poland we have the Fat Thursday - the last Thursday before Lent (which is TODAY) - the tradition here is to eat a lot of doughnuts and crisp ribbons (aka angel wings), the idea behind it - it's the last moment for you to indulge yourself in the food forbidden during Lent.

We will have pancakes on Tuesday.
In some places there will be pancake races, where people run along tossing a pancake in a frying pan. I've never done it, but it looks fun.

Yes, we also have something like that in Poland, but it's not called Pancake Day, it's called "The Herring Tuesday" - the last day of the Carnaval, before Ash Wednesday, it's called The Herring because you traditionally eat pickled herring in many variations, rather than meat and substantial food. And in the period between Fat Thursday and The Herring Tuesday people usually go out to parties of various kinds, fancy dress parties are quite popular then.

Funny what ideas people come up with over time.

Karneval goes on for 7 days and many people need a holiday - AFTERWARDS

Its really about A LOT of drinking and the hospitals are full with whatever comes out of that. That is the bad side of it.

, I don't live in a Fasching (Karneval)-region. No parties, no parade, no special things...but the kids will be around in a costume and beg at the doors for some sweets at the Faschings-Thuesday.
For the fun I will have some Pfannkuchen (filled with jam) at work. The backery shops will have tons of it next Thuesday.

I read she was amazing as Blanche Dubois a few years ago in London and I am so upset I missed that. I love her as an actress, she was stunning in the Deep blue sea. I would love to see her on stage again with a part which would do her more justice than Emma (Betrayal). And yes I would love it if it happened in London rather than NY

She's a great dramatic actress, The Deep Blue Sea was a very good movie, she did a great job, probably even better than Vivien Leigh in 1955. Shame the demand for such movies is in decline nowadays. It was a great, low-key but very intense and excellently played drama which deserved much more recognition than it received.
