Thanks.
Maybe we should post it here. Not sure everyone has an account there. But I found mine:

I guess I have to write SPOILERS as well (not sure if I have to).

DEFIANCE... DELIVERS

There will be tears... There will be cheers...

Mostly though, DEFIANCE is an expertly crafted, beautifully acted drama set inside... a good old fashioned action movie. Complete with compelling and complex heroes played by Daniel Craig (Tuvia), Liev Schreiber (Zus) and Jamie Bell (Asael), DEFIANCE grips you from the first frame and doesn’t let go.

Directed by Ed Zwick, DEFIANCE is the fascinating true story about three Jewish brothers who escape into the Belarussian forest to survive when Jews were being massacred by the thousands during the Nazi invasion of Poland. The brothers don’t just hide. They don’t just survive. They fight. They save 1,200 other Jews in the process, all of whom form a community in the middle of the woods that provides freedom, hope and a base of operation for missions against the Nazis. I can’t believe I’d never heard about this story or these amazing, courageous people before.

I don’t wish to give up the whole plot here because action movies rely on audiences not knowing every move before it happens on screen. So I don’t plan on providing a lot of detail here but here’s what stood out for me: The film’s opening sequence takes what appears to be real footage circa 1941 of Jews bring viciously rounded up for slaughter and seamlessly blends from black and white pictures with a scratchy, ancient look about them to the shiny, colorful grandness of cinematographer, Eduardo Serra’s luscious framework. The segue is particularly effective because it starts the film off with the reminder that we’re about to witness something that is based on true events, but lets us know that we’ll be seeing it with Zwick and company’s signature look and feel of his best filmmaking efforts. It doesn’t disappoint.

Daniel Craig is the moral center of the film, but as mentioned in paragraph one, these are complex men. Don’t expect “good guys fight bad guys” and call it a day. While Craig’s character is the leader, he also experiences moments of weakness, allowing other characters reveal their strengths in those moments. I was really impressed by Craig in this movie. I’ve always thought of him as a “fluffy” actor but with DEFIANCE, he proves himself as a serious dramatic force. Liev Schreiber, who is consistently good in every role he tackles, really pulls out all the stops with “Zus.” This is Schreiber’s coming out party as a bonafide movie star. And Jamie Bell is all grown up and kicking some serious thespian ass in the film. Nice to see little Billy Elliott sinking his teeth into a meaty role. The stunning Alexa Davalos (where has this girl been?) is a find. The entire ensemble is terrific down to the smallest role.

From the direction, editing, cinematography, costumes to the production design and incredibly realistic sound, DEFIANCE is simply beautiful to watch. And I’m glad that it didn’t travel the traditional Holocaust drama road, but emerged as something very different and quite satisfying. Despite tackling some pretty difficult subject matter and dealing with intense situations, unbelievably, the film is not depressing but rather... Inspiring... It’s just an old-fashioned crowd pleaser.

On Compass

The Golden Compass will apparently end up being the 9th biggest grossing movie of the year 2007 and the biggest grossing movie for New Line in its 40 year history, with the exception of “the Rings” trilogy.
New Line apparently sold off the foreign territorial rights, which turned out to be a big mistake, but that has nothing to do with the picture. Warner Brothers will certainly not make that mistake.
Unfortunately the boycott by religious organizations was effective in the United States. I heard a number of parents saying that they would never let their children see that kind of film. They had specifically been told by their ministers/priests not the see the film.
The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..

I agree sad people. I am an atheist so i suppose that makes me sound bad but in all honesty i have lived my life morally and have never knowingly hurt anybody and have always tried to treat people in a fair and sympathetic way. I loved the Golden Compass and read all 3 books hope the next two will be made into films . If anyone is interested i have just read a book by Mary and john Gribbon called THE SCIENCE OF PHILIP PULLMANS HIS DARK MATERIALS. It tries to explain the scientific side of the books to ordinary people like me, brilliant book I did not entirely get everything but made me think, opened my mind which is great loved it. :D :D :D

Litltle Defiance piece in the free UK magazine Shortlist

Post by Ang »

The freebie magazine, Shortlist has got a little bit about Daniel swapping "tuxedos for combats to flee Nazis". Nothing new really just mentions that he doesn't have to worry about getting jobs after Bond because he's already doing things in between. The pictures accompanying are the same ones we've already seen - nice to have it pop up though, made my morning! :)

What makes you think being an atheist makes you sound like a bad person? You don't need to believe in God to have high moral standards. And even if you do believe in God you don't have to be religious. That's two different things. Organised religion is a good thing if it helps you find or stick to moral values, but you can also do that on your own, without anyone telling you what to do or believe.
Personally, I'm not an atheist, but I would call myself areligious. To each his own...

will we see him really as JB for the next 10 years??

Four more films: Daniel Craig as Bond Daniel Craig has signed a record-breaking deal to play James Bond for a further four films.

Hollywood studio MGM has tied the 39-year-old actor into a deal which could make him 30million over the next decade.

The contract will incorporate a sliding salary based on how much each consecutive film makes at the box office and, importantly, in merchandising.

His first film as 007, Casino Royale, made more than any other Bond movie when it was released in November.

The level of MGM’s commitment to Craig represents its confidence that he will reinvigorate the franchise and become a global star.

The deal far eclipses those signed by any previous Bond actor, including most recently Pierce Brosnan, who parted company with the filmmaker in an argument over his financial worth.

Craig’s tenure at the helm of the most profitable film franchise in history is estimated to make MGM hundreds of millions of pounds.

30m deal: The contract for 007 puts Craig in the starring role for the next decade

It was already known that Craig would play Bond for a second time for the 22nd film, due out on November 7 next year, but his further plans had been unclear.

Now his future at MI6 seems assured.

According to movie industry bible the Hollywood Reporter, MGM’s chief executive and chairman Harry Sloan “signed Daniel Craig to do four more James Bond films” because franchises are “the bases of any studio”.

Craig’s performance in Casino Royale was applauded by many critics who had previously written him off for not being good-looking enough for the role, and even for having blond hair.

The film made 13million in Britain on its opening weekend, smashing the 9.1million record set by Die Another Day, Pierce Brosnan’s last film as Bond, in November 2002.

A further four films are likely to tie up Craig for the best part of a decade. It will mean that by the time he comes to the end of the contract, the actor will be pushing 50.

Record-breaker: Casino Royale - starring Craig - made more than any other Bond movie

Good for Daniel!! I can see him making Bonds until he's 50, in fact, I assumed he would do so. Some of the previous Bonds were really looking old when they were doing their final turns as JB.

Besides, if Daniel looks this good at 40, he'll still be totally awesome at 50, I have no doubt. :D

It sounds like the old stuff from last year - same amount of films, same money - all which was denied later and isn´t the word, that they would like to continue working together (Babs and Dan) but will do it one by one?
I feel, this is just someone a bit late with old news.

ON THE GOLDEN COMPASS ,I haven't been active in my church for a while but I think you over estemate the boycott success . I think a lot of christains would make there own decisions on the matter or go see for themselves . I think a lot of people just never heard of the books and weren't interested enough to check it out . I think the controversy might have actually brought more people to watch it to see what the fuss was about .
