I love that bit of the film....John threw right old strop and in the circumstances, I don't blame him.
If there are any question-marks over Daniel's actual physical strength (as opposed to "cosmetic" muscle) then it's worth watching the scene earlier in the film in the railway station with the old man.
Daniel hauls the old man onto the platform from a full squat, taking his whole weight and lifting him in one. The actor playing the old man is actually an older man, and from the angle they were doing this, he could have gotten very little push up to help Daniel with the lifting. If you think maybe the old man was perhaps 130-140 pounds - he was quite thin, that is still an impressive amount to haul as a "dead weight" from a crouch to a full stand.
The pup may have had no meat to spare on his bones in those days.....but what there was, it was all muscle and strength.
