Somehow they always try to melk the cow (us) as much as possible. :x

But I am really surprised at how good the film is doing. Much more loved, it seems, as many critical voices state. Here again what the german article says:
It says BEST Blue-ray sales start EVER - BETTER than The Dark Knight.
The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..

It is true they want our money. I also think that Marc was so criticized for his vision that they may have adopted a wait a see attitude. Now that the movie is doing well the execs see that his vision may be profitable and have given him the greenlight to do what he wanted to do from the beginging. It has to be tough for directors and actors because they have to answer to studios who think only of the bottom line, not the art. But the actors esp the star and the director take the blame when things don't work out. No wonder Dan is looking so tired lateley. Even though I want to see another movie soon, I hope he gets some real rest.

The movie was critisized, yes and as far as the editing goes, I agree, but good thing was, that actually Daniel was for most critics still the best thing in it and was taken out of the beating this time :D Rightly so IMO. But the pressure is off now, I think, the film will go down as a BO success and even more now, that the DVD´s are doing so well. Time will be good to the movie - that´s what many think at least.
As for the resting - I think this is exactly what he doing now. The Tim Tin was not planned and messed around with his break schedule.

I was having a conversation about DC with a friend at work today. He didn't think that DC would ever win an award as James Bond because he "...could only take the role so far." and he was playing the same role all the time! I pointed out that he was nominated for a BAFTA for Casino Royale but he was unmoved. I guess it just depends on how impactful future Bond movies are but I have no doubt in Dan's ability to clinch an award somewhere along the line! :)

`Quantum` stuntman Derek Lea talks about his fight with 007

Quantum Of Solace - 02-04-09

He's smashed his shoulder, broken both legs, fractured his pelvis and set fire to his face and hands. It’s all in a days work for professional stunt man Derek Lea - reports The Sun.

But the Quantum of Solace star is the first to admit the real British heroes are Our Boys and Girls fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan.

He is one of the most experienced stuntmen in the world, providing death defying tricks on numerous Hollywood blockbusters.

His latest cinema role saw him fighting Daniel Craig in the last 007 film, before plunging from the top of building and through the roof of a car.

But Derek, 45, says he has nothing but awe and admiration to for troops on the front line: “Being a stuntman has its dangers but what they are doing out there is astonishing. They don’t know where the next attack is coming from and that must be a hard environment to live in.”

Derek knows a thing or two about the dangers of warfare after working with Steven Spielberg on WWII epic Saving Private Ryan.

“Now there’s a director who is all about authenticity. He made sure absolutely everything happened as it would in the real event.

“In one stunt I was on a landing craft which catches fire. I was the last in a group of twenty blokes to go up like a match, but because I was at the back I couldn’t put myself out.

“You wear a silicone suit and get covered with flammable liquid, with a tube in your mouth to breath. You have only about 20 seconds before you’re in big trouble and I started to cook.

“I’ve still got the scars to prove it.”

In the latest Bond movie Lea plays a villain who takes on Daniel Craig in a rooftop brawl.

“We run into each other on the roof and he has me by the throat and dangles me over the edge.

“When he asks me who I am and what I’m doing I tell him to p*** off. Then he drops me off the roof. I enjoyed that film because there were only two swear words in the entire script and I got one of them. Judi Dench got the other one.”

In his twenty years as a top stunt Derek has seen a lot of changes to the industry.

“These days in movies there’s a lot of reliance on CGI, but unless it’s done on a huge budget it just doesn’t beat the real thing.

“Lord of the Rings was the first time CGI started to look really special and convincing, but even now when I see I film I can tell when they’ve not had a big enough budget for the computer graphics stuff.

“The best thing about Quantum of Solace is the director used real stunt men for the action so it all looks absolutely top drawer.

“The fact that there were so many accidents on the set during the making of the film indicates who much action there is.

“For action I think this is definitely the best Bond film yet.”

If its not for Bond, its not his fault - more likely because Bond for many just is NOT award material. Probably with the Bafta nom it went as far as it goes. He should have won that though. It was home turf and Forest Withaker won all the others anyway. But on the other hand, that´s not really the point. I didn´t see his film and when he was better, he was

I've watched Qos so much I'm used to the editing. I think it is a shame because I feel like the acting, action, and emotional content of the film far surpassed CR. The Jokes were halirious but because it moved so fast I didn't catch alot of them until the 2nd and 3rd viewing. Though I think the images that Marc caputured were beautiful and he really knew how to capture Dan's eyes. I was transfixed in almost every scence.

I am glad he's resting. Damn I hate/love that a man I've never met and don't know for beans makes me feel like a concerned girlfriend.

Yup, that´s the scary part  But good fan that I am, I am perfectly willing to give him weeks and weeks outside of the public eye, because what he had to do (promoting two films back to back) must have been pretty much an overdose for him, although I found him looking pretty much his normal - slightly annoyed to be papped self - in the recent shots. Guess less of that will make him feel like a normal human being again

The first Quantum of Solace DVDs and Blu-rays were good, not great, and director Marc Forster knows it.

He is now working on elite versions for his James Bond movie, Forster tells Sun Media.

"With this first DVD (last week's Special Edition on standard DVD, plus the similar Blu-ray), it all happened pretty fast and I didn't really have the time. I was only a little bit involved. But I will be working on the second DVD. I will be much more involved in that, putting pieces on."

Among bonuses, there will be commentaries and new behind-the-scenes featurettes. "It is much more in-depth," Forster promises.
YES!!! That's great news. :D
So we have to pay twice? Now that irks me. I know that's the way with the Director's cut, but come on Sony. Why didn't he just give us the full movie in the theater. Grr.
Annoying as it is, that's the way it goes these days. It's becoming more and more usual to keep the screen version rather short and then release a single and a double dvd first and a director's cut with more extra features later, so I decided not to buy a dvd until I knew if there will be a director's cut of QoS. I know I'm being a bad fan, but it saves me some money. :P
I'm really curious to see the longer version now. I suspect that I'll like it better than the short one.
The more joy we have, the more nearly perfect we are. ~Spinoza~

`Quantum` lands #2 spot in US video sales chart, tops rentals

Quantum Of Solace - 03-04-09

Summit Entertainment's "Twilight" remained the top home video seller the week ending March 29, despite a stiff challenge from a pair of newly released blockbuster theatricals. The vampire fantasy held onto the No. 1 slot on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart for a second consecutive week, after selling an additional 2.6 million copies through the weekend. The film vaulted to No. 1 on the previous week's chart after just a single day of sales, in which consumers snapped up more than 3 million units, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Challengers "Quantum of Solace," from MGM, and "Bolt," from Walt Disney Studios, finished at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Both films generated more than $100 million in theaters, with the newest James Bond film grossing $168.4 million and the Disney animated feature $114 million. "Quantum" was new in stores; "Bolt" had been released on a Sunday, so a small percentage of its sales were included in the previous week's tally.

"Quantum" did, however, top both the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc chart and Home Media Magazine's video rental chart for the week. The Blu-ray Disc edition of "Quantum" accounted for 28% of the title's total sales.

Bolt finished the week at No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart, behind "Twilight," and at No. 4 on the rental chart, behind Universal Studios' "Role Models," which after two weeks on top slipped to No. 3.

In the digital download arena, demand for "Twilight" also was unsurpassed, with the title coming in at No. 1 on Apple's iTunes chart. "Quantum" debuted at No. 2, and MGM reports half the purchases were in HD.

CBN memebers are doing new reviews due to the DVD, I guess.

Here are some:

This is the review I posted when the film came out with a few minor revisions. I stand by it:

If Casino Royale was like a new band arriving to invigorate a flagging music scene, Quantum of Solace is like the all important second album which will determine whether the band becomes an ongoing source of excitement, or ultimately will be remembered as a star which shone brightly but briefly (e.g. Second Coming, Liverpool, Morning Glory, DogManStar etc.). Often these albums are critical successes but commercial flops, or critical and commercial disappointments which may be re-evaluated in the future, but ultimately that is of little importance. Every so often you get an album surpasses everyone’s expectations in all departments, and tells you that the artist is around to say. Quantun of Solace is on that level. The Craig era hasn't run out of steam, it's on full steam ahead.

Quantum Of Solace is, quite simply, a delight. From it's short sharp shock of a PTS, to it's vaguely psychedelic opening titles, through it's many twists, turns and exciting stunts, right up to it's almost poetic final shot (minus the gunbarrel), this is the most purely enjoyable Bond movie in years. Not only that, but this is the tightest, most focused and economical Bond movie since... Licence To Kill?... Live and Let Die?... Goldfinger?!? In a long time anyway. I don't know where the complaints of humourlessness are coming from, this is a far more genially natured film than Royale, and a few other Bond films too. After the unprecedented level of acclaim thrown at Casino Royale, EON could have taken the franchise down a self-important, fanboyish route, but instead they gave us something better and all the rarer; a truly exciting and invigorating action movie. There has been little to compare with this film in terms of thrills and entertainment; the Bond series is back on the top where it belongs.

Roger Ebert used to talk of the "Bruised Forearm" movie when reviewing films like Temple of Doom, Lethal Weaponand Die Hard 2; films where you would hold on to the arm of your date tightly during intense action scenes in the hope that everything is going to be alright. QOS is in that tradition. The action is edited with the rhythm of a heartbeat reacting to heavy sulphate abuse, but the amazing thing is it actually works. You don't just watch these action scenes passively, you're right there with Bond. So intense and involving are the action scenes in this film that I was genuinely disoriented when I came out of the cinema. What can I say? I have little time for the modern Bay/Bourne school of shakeycam, but this was some intense action that truly won me over. There is also some variety to the action, with Foster introducing tricks which haven't been seen in the series before, and giving us an opera scene which recalls DePalma at his mischievous best. Who would have thought he had it in him?

Now, QOS probably isn't for everyone. If the "armour" line in Royale was the highlight of the film for you and you really, really wanted more of that stuff, you may be disappointed. It is more action film than drama, frankly, but the film embraces that fact and so do I.

That is not to say that the film is without depth. The last film was the franchise's biggest stab at a genuine romance; here the film deals with the morality of killing and the grimness of mortality. The confrontation between Bond and Camille in the caves paints images in the mind which are genuinely chilling. And I have never, ever felt a death in the Bond franchise like I felt one of the deaths in this film. Like one of the characters in the film, I was left wondering "why did this have to happen".

This film did not draw any quasi-Oscar buzz like Royale did, nor did it ever look like sweeping the BAFTAs, but the performances are genuinely fantastic. Craig is less of an actor in this film, and more of a star. And frankly, I like it that way. He is not only Connery, Moore and Dalton all at once; he is also Marvin, Bronson and Stallone. He is all this and, of course, himself too. Mathieu Amalric is perhaps not one of the most memorable villains of the series, but it is a great performance which at times seems to be channeling, of all people, Klaus Maria Brandauer. Judi Dench has sincerely never been better. And Olga Kurylenko shows a level of talent that certainly wasn't even hinted at in Hitman. Her character's relationship with Bond generally feels platonic but heartfelt more than anything; a real sign of development and maturing in this franchise.

In short, Quantum of Solace is a Bond film which can stand proudly not only next to a great variety of Bond films, but to many classics of the genre too. Easily my most enjoyable experience at the cinema last year.

another extract

Allow me to make observations on the acting from my point of view as an actor [after your eyes have made a full arc]. Now, I wouldn’t pretend that I’m some kind of RADA grad or that I’ve been doing this for decades. I’m only a couple of years out of college and a fledgling in the professional world, but I will venture to say with confidence that I understand what I’ve studied and know how to create characters, and I know intention when I see it. Every choice that each actor in this movie made was 100% deliberate. Every moment in which we saw them had intent and thought behind it. In Bond, I saw a man who was hungry for satisfaction from the deaths of men who conspired with those that caused Vesper’s death. That hunger was there, but so was the emptiness that lingered after each kill, the growing realization that killing Quantum members one at a time wouldn’t offer a quantum of solace. Reading all this into it, am I? Not by a long shot. These are professionals, and I can promise that professionals consider every possible aspect of their characters that they can conceive of. No moment is neglected. One may not like some of these choices, but every nonverbal moment communicated something that was just as deliberate as every scripted word. I, for one, am very thankful not to have been treated as if I needed everything verbally spelled out for me. And it’s beyond denial—Daniel Craig is James Bond. No one’s taken the character on such a compelling journey and I can’t imagine anyone could do it as well as what I’ve seen in these last two movies.

Where QUANTUM OF SOLACE really succeeds is in the performance of Daniel Craig as James Bond. Much like in CASINO ROYALE, Daniel Craig carries the picture in a way that we've never seen from a Bond actor. Unlike CASINO ROYALE, however, Craig carries the film on his own, as he does not have Eva Green to share the screen with this time around.

Craig continues to infuse the Bond character with new life in this film, and it's greatly appreciated given how stale the franchise had become in the lead-up to CASINO ROYALE. QUANTUM OF SOLACE features the best acting job by any of the actors who have portrayed Bond up to this point, and will be a performance that will be remembered for years to come as one of the great Bond performances. Little moments, such as Bond being dressed down by M in a hotel room or Bond watching the last breaths escape the mouth of a man he had just fought with in a hotel room, show that Craig's Bond is a much different character than anything we've seen before. Craig's Bond is a much darker Bond, and one that is actually believable as a government agent. It's believable that Craig's Bond could strike fear into the hearts of his enemies just through his presence, something that has been missing from the films up to this point. His Bond is cold, reckless, and unpredictable, something that is a refreshing change from the usual portrayal of Bond and the "witty" one-liners that used to accompany every scene of this franchise.

Daniel Craig shines once again in the lead role of James Bond, the blunt instrument wielded by a government paralyzed with fear. His seemingly innate ability to express the subtlest of emotions (the best example involves a scene where one of Bond's allies lies dying) really brings the character to life; it's a damned shame he hasn't been nominated by the Academy for acting yet.

The Bond character is in the best point in his 50 year on-screen career. Bond can owe this largely to the actor who portrays him, Daniel Craig, who once again, delivers a magnificent performance. Daniel Craig represents Ian Fleming's Bond like no other - Suave and rugged, gentleman but not afraid to get his hands dirty, and above all - vulnerable. Quantum of Solace represents Bond when he's at his most vulnerable infact, really ever. Coming off the death of his lover, we've never seen Bond with such a rage. He walks around the film with his certain swagger, but always with purpose, always scheming in his head. If people get in his way, they die. This is in no way Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan, killing a man with a clever trick, a twinkle in the eye and a quick line attached. This is a man you could believed was a hired assassin.

It is no longer CASINO ROYALE that rebooted James Bond 007 in the cinema. QUANTUM OF SOLACE is the real groundbreaking episode in Bond’s illustrious filmic career. Granted, ROYALE paved a path, but SOLACE allows BOND to strut down it and finally stretch his wings once clipped by VESPER LYND.

Just a funny story I wanted to share...

Last weekend, I was bored and ended up walking up to Blockbuster, my dvd rental place, to get a movie. On entering, I couldn't concentrate on what movie to rent as I was distracted by all the Quantum of Solace merchandising stuff that was scattered around! Feeling a bit restless and cavalier, I went up to the desk clerk and asked them what they did with their display material.

"Oh, we just chuck it out!" He shrugged.

"Well don't chuck it out! Save it for me!" I cried.

He told me he'd have to check with his manager and phone me back. I didn't expect to get a phone call but, amazingly, received one on Sunday. They'd agreed to my plea as long as I donated a sum of money to their charity called 'Starlight'. I joked with the guy on the phone that I lived a 20 minute walk away from the dvd place and, as it was quite a big stand, I wasn't sure how I could get it home. It could be quite embarrassing to be wandering around with a fake Daniel under my arm!

"Oh don't worry!" I was told. "You can have one that's boxed up."

Upon my arrival, they presented me with a HUGE box!!!  There was no way I could carry that home so I had to get the bus. It was like a flatpack thing! I tore into it as soon as I got home to discover that I would have needed to assemble the whole thing myself. I decided not to do this because...

a) I have no patience or expertise in that kind of thing.
b) I didn't really have the room for the whole thing and I refused to take down any pictures.
c) I just wanted the Daniel bit of the display anyway.

So, I ripped the figure of Daniel off and left the bit where he's walking away from Olga in the desert! Now, he sits very nicely in the corner as an accompaniment to my official QOS poster!!!!!!! :D  8)

Stana Katic: The Hollywood Interview

You got to be a Bond girl, albeit briefly, in the latest installment of the series, Quantum of Solace. What was that like?
It was a blast! I really wanted to be a part of that film, and was up for the role of Strawberry Fields originally, but they felt I wasn’t right for it, plus I didn’t want to play someone who got killed, and everyone gets killed in that bloody movie! (laughs) But I got to spend three days working on that legendary sound stage in London. Daniel Craig was great, very funny, very charming. And Marc Forster was an amazing director. We’ve become friends and he has such an amazing, light touch as a director, and at the same time, has this incredible core strength, which is a great combination for a director to have. In many ways he reminds me of the way Johnny Depp played the character of Sir James Matthew Barrie in Finding Neverland. I wonder if Johnny modeled his performance after Marc.
